An Ode to Coconut Oil!
AN ODE TO COCONUT OIL!
Coconut oil is one of out favorite fats and it has multiple benefits through eating and using topically (on the skin). 90% of coconut oil is a saturated fat and 50% of that fat is lauric acid which potent in antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, and antifungal effects. Lauric acid has the ability to form monolaurin, a unique compound that can destroy lipid-coated viruses which are now proposed to be the primary cause of heart disease and stroke. Additionally, it can work to improve insulin sensitivity aiding with blood sugar balance.
Coconut oil can also be tonifying for the thyroid gland and can aid in boosting metabolism. Its anti-inflammatory effects have been studied as a support for Alzheimer’s disease as the brain is greater than 60% fat in its makeup. It is solid at room temperature, making it a heat stable fat.
Coconut oil can be used for cooking and it has less risk for oxidizing or creating free-radicals such as commonly seen with polyunsaturated fats. Try it tossed on roasted vegetables with curry powder, yum! Coconut oil can also be used topically or applied to the skin, coconut oil can have antiviral and antibacterial effects making it a great moisturizer and salve to use with eczema or injuries such as cuts or burns. As an organic moisturizer, coconut oil can also be used as a personal lubricant without the irritants of commercial products and helping to prevent UTIs. Choose extra-virgin organic coconut oil for the least processed products available and you may want two, one for the kitchen and one for the bedroom!
