Berry Blast Mocktail
BERRY BLAST MOCKTAIL
FOOD AS MEDICINE
We tend to indulge in alcohol more over the holiday season and this can really slow down your metabolism. As few as 1-2 glasses of wine or cocktails can slow your metabolism by 70% for two reasons. First, alcohol dehydrates the body, lowering the water available for other biochemical processes like lipolysis or the breaking down of fat cells. Second, the liver is the primary fat burning organ. When we drink alcohol, the liver must focus on detoxification as opposed to fat burn. Try infusing water with fresh fruit especially citrus for extra electrolytes or opt for sparkling water with a squeeze of lemon or lime between drinks! This mocktail combines antioxidant-rich blackberries, tart cherry juice and basil with sparkling water for an alcohol-free option. Even if you add your favorite spirit, you will still come out ahead in terms of a lower calorie and lower carbohydrate choice than typical sugary drinks!
INGREDIENTS
1 cup muddled blackberries
¼ cup basil leaves
2 Tbsp lime juice
½ cup tart cherry juice
Optional ½ tsp honey
8oz Topo Chico, or sparkling water of choice
DIRECTIONS
Muddle together the blackberries and basil in a cocktail shaker or mason jar. Add the lime juice, tart cherry juice and honey if using. Shake, then strain over ice. Top with the sparkling water.
