CHOLESTEROL MYTH: A STANDARD LIPID PROFILE IS THE BEST WAY TO DETERMINE CARDIAC RISK
CHOLESTEROL MYTH: A STANDARD LIPID PROFILE IS THE BEST WAY TO DETERMINE CARDIAC RISK
FACT:
Recent medical concerns with cholesterol have moved from a focus on total cholesterol and HDL ratio to lipoprotein particle size. We are more concerned with small dense LDL particles vs. large buoyant LDL particles as the small ones are more likely to penetrate arteries and form plaque! After all it is not a cholesterol gold-star report card we are looking for, we are looking to prevent heart disease, so we have to start looking beyond these standard lipid profiles and further investigate the root causes of heart disease and stroke.
Some suggested functional labs are: homocysteine, C-reactive protein, lipoprotein particle size.
